OneBig StartUp: Our First Product!

October 7th, 200616 Comments

College Startup is all about helping you get started with the art of online business. In that spirit, we are pleased to announce our very first product, the OneBig StartUp Package.

One Big Start Up

The OneBig StartUp package includes everything you need to run a low-maintenance, profitable Web 2.0 niche content website, gain PageRank and build traffic by becoming part of the OneBig Network. In other words, it is a great way to gain leverage and make a modest profit at the same time (exactly what you need when you’re just getting started).

For just $250, you get:

1. A custom designed header graphic
2. An easy to setup site template
3. A script that automatically updates your site

In other words, you set your site up, sit back, and let it ride. All the work is up front. Then you just wait a couple of months…and BANG! you monetize it. We’ll even show you how!

The best part is that we guarantee that you’ll at least make back the $250 purchase price in the first 12 months or we’ll buy it back from you*. That’s how much confidence we have in this product.

So what’s involved?

The process is simple. All the work goes in at the beginning. Begin by choosing a niche topic of interest. Then, go out and find the best, most authoritive sites on your topic (start by finding 9-12 sites). Each authority site should have a feed for its latest content. Your site will simply feature the latest headlines from each site that you deem an “authority.” In other words, you’ll be making a portal or hub of expert information about your topic. Constantly updated…automatically. And you can make money from it too!

For examples of what your OneBig StartUp site will look like and how it will function, check out these current sites in the OneBig Network:

For a ridiculously low price of $25 get everything you need to host your OneBig site.

*This buy-back guarantee is conditional on satisfactory efforts to setup, promote and maintain your site. In other words, the site has to be a functioning member of the OneBig Network for 12 months.

How do you drive traffic to these websites?

Ryan | October 8, 2006

We are doing standard SEO for the entire network which includes the release of Press Releases, linking from established sites, etc.

We expect each site to land with at least a PR 5 and perhaps a PR 6 right out of the starting box.

Getting your very own, well re-inforced PR 5 or 6 site from the very beginning is not cheap or easy to do if you’re just starting out.

The well reinforced part is critical. Anyone can buy a PR5 site from SitePoint for $300-400, but the trick is keeping it there over the long haul. As a member of the OneBig Network, you won’t have to work for your PR ranking and you’ll be able to leverage it to other sites of your choice.

“Ah, nothing like profiting off the work of others.”

Nathan, I get your point, but to be honest, there is real user *value* in setting up an meta-informational niche site like this. Just look at Squidoo for example.

Ryan | October 8, 2006

Alright Nathan, if you insist, I’ll have my graphic designer make a bigger Order Now! button ASAP ;-)

I agree, in its current state it is hard to notice.

Sure looks nicer than my crappy feed page. Can you think of anything we can barter with? I’m too broke … but like the looks of your script.

Ryan | October 8, 2006

Hi Hart.
I barter for content. $10 of credit per 500 word article. That would be 25 articles.

We’re especially interested in travel articles:

What about the domain name… can you use your own?

Ryan | October 9, 2006

The only requirement for the domain names is that they start with the words “onebig”

But yes, you’ll be responsible for choosing and buying your domain name.

HART (1-800-HART) | October 10, 2006

Hi again. It’s an interesting offer .. content for barter .. thanks for trying .. but I have too much on my plate, as it is, to come up with an additional 12,500 words .. Back to the old drawing board, and my crappy feed page!

PS You need the subscribe to comment plugin!

This is a great initiative. Keep it up.

WOW! You talk about not “diluting” your work, but this service completely goes counter to that. In fact, you are promoting a service that is directly aimed at profiting off the words of other writers without their permission of adding their feeds to the site — not cool dude.

I think it’s a cool idea, but you should set it up that each owner has to ask permission to use their feeds for commercial use. Or at least share the profits.

You start your post of with:

“You talk about not “diluting” your work, but this service completely goes counter to that.”

But then you fail to justify how this project constitutes “diluting” work.

This product allows you to create a “lens” pointing people to the best feeds on the web relating to a certain topic. Squidoo does this on a larger scale. So are you arguing that Squidoo is illegitimate?

By your logic valid businesses such as The Drudge Report (which creates lists of links to other people’s content), Google (which organizes other people’s content) and other sites which organize information are all illegitimate.

That just doesn’t make sense.

The fact is that linking to authority sites in a particular niche creates a service that is useful to both the reader and the site that is being linked to and doesn’t constitute the stealing of content…whatsoever (unless the listing of headlines with links to the original site counts as stealing).

David Krug | October 17, 2006

DAvid,
While I respect that opinion. I would ask you if Google asked for permission to include you in their highly profitable search engine. Or Live.com or Ask.com or even Yahoo.

I mean what would be the difference ?

[...] With the OneBigMaine site I’ve identified 4 regions for monetization. Region 1 is the main page and will serve as an informational guide to the state of Maine. Region 2 is a blog about Maine, focusing primarily on Maine related news. Region 3 will be a property and rentals listing section of the site where people will pay an annual fee to list their Maine vacation homes. Region 4 will be a OneBig feed list and will serve a dual function. First, it will be a huge PageRank boost (getting linked in from more than 10 other sites in the OneBig network).
