When you need to market your services the old-fashioned way

There is no shortage of websites that will try to teach you about online marketing, and that’s a good thing for beginners. However, not every type of business can be optimally promoted online. Take local services, for example, like those college students are known to do part-time: lawn mowing, gardening, babysitting, tutoring, book lending and the like. These are usually offered around the campus or in the neighborhood, and while social media can conceivably help, the most effective way of promotion is going old school.

Networking. Nothing beats having a lot of friends and acquaintances to point you to certain opportunities and recommend you to their own friends. Don’t miss out on gatherings that can expand your network. Remember to smile and establish eye contact.

Posters. Use catchy designs and brightly colored paper if you can. Often there are billboards around campus that are reserved for students so you may want to try placing some posters there. Don’t forget to include your contact information.

Flyers. For a more proactive approach, try handing out flyers about your services in crowded places like outside the canteen, the mall, the park, or any other relavant sites. You can also drop them in household mailboxes.

Newspapers. If you can to broaden your scope, why not place an ad on the local paper? This will probably work best if your services target an older demographic. Do this on the day of peak readership to make it cost-effective.

It may be a high tech world but low tech promotion still has its uses. Try the methods above to get your business going, all of them at the same time in a blitz for maximum effect.
