Blogging for profit
It seems logical that my first post about how I make money from my dorm room focus on my primary source of income: blogging. It hardly seems like work to me, I love writing about topics I’m passionate about. Blogging can be very profitable if you focus on creating great content (great content is going to be a common theme on this website).
Darren Rowse makes six figures from blogging! I am not making quite that much, but I do have enough money to have fun on weekends and fund the ideas that pop into my head.
There are a lot of strategies for making a profitable blog, and I can’t possibly cover them all in this post, but I will explain how I have gone about making money from ThePokerBlog.net.
I started The Poker Blog in early August 2005 and by the end of September I had earned $350. That’s not bad, $300 of the $350 had been earned in September. Casino affiliates will tell you that earning $300 in your 2nd month is great, but they usually aren’t familiar with blogs. I think a blog about gambling or casinos could easily earn 4 figures in it’s first few months if the owner focuses on carefully placed ads and marketing the site.
On The Poker Blog I make sure that anytime I mention an online card room I link to it with my affiliate link - even if it’s Party Poker and I feel like 99% of all online poker players have an account, I link to it on the off chance a new comer decides to try it out after hearing about it on my site. There is no reason not to use my referral link - it takes me 2 seconds to copy paste it and it could earn me $100!
If you visit the site you’ll notice that I have 3 banners on the left hand side - I’m not sure whether those will be effective or not, I just put them up with a redesign. If I find that my average number of clicks per day is going down I will switch back to text links and focus on finding new ways to promote my affiliate links.
I cannot use Google AdSense because the site relates to gambling. There is some gray area since it’s a blog about poker and it doesn’t directly promote gambling, it explains how to play poker, but why risk my AdSense account when I can earn much more money using casino and poker room affiliate links?
I picked a blog about poker because poker is something I know a lot about, I always have new stories (I play a lot) and I don’t mind reading articles and other poker blogs to find out about the news. If you create a blog about window treatments but you’re not particularly interested in window treatments you’ll probably have a tough time posting regularly and writing interesting posts.
