Success, finally

December 14th, 20056 Comments

I am going to assume most of you had never heard of me until a few weeks ago. Actually, you might not have heard of me until just now when you clicked a link to come to my website. I’m certainly not one of the “famous” bloggers - famous in the blogosphere really isn’t that big of an accomplishment, is it? My blogs log 300-500 unique sessions every day. Not very impressive, especially when major blogs are logging hundreds of thousands of page views in a day and it takes me a month to hit 25,000 pageviews. But still, I consider this my first successful blog.

It’s successful both in terms of traffic and revenue. It certainly doesn’t match Darren’s reported $30,000 a month, but for me it’s the start of something big. I think I can thank 9rules for the help in getting this blog off the ground.

Why is this blog successful?

9rules generates most of my traffic, and through that traffic I get people linking to me and mentioning my posts. 9rules does exactly what they aim to do - they select the best content on the web, regardless of how well known it is, and include it on their website. In turn, the bloggers, whether they’re big names or small, receive more traffic and recognition for their hard work.

The traffic is important for generating revenue. When I posted my link to Six Figure Blogging in a recent post I got 170 clicks and of those clicks 2 people purchased the Six Figure Blogging course. If my site was only getting 50 unique sessions a day it would have taken me a week to get enough clicks to make two sales. Since then I’ve made another sale from the button on my sidebar. Without traffic, revenue is only a dream. The total for December (which isn’t even halfway over) comes to $305.00.

I’ve also started to include a few Google ads on the site. To date they’ve generated a whopping $0.37. I know it’s not much, but still, to make any money from something I enjoy doing is great.

How can you create a successful blog?

Pick a topic you’re passionate about, otherwise you won’t write regularly. Write original content. Email other bloggers and let them know that your site is out there. Comment on blogs that you read regularly. Do whatever you can to become part of the community.

You can always try to submit your website to 9rules or write for other networks, but these networks are getting harder and harder to get into. I actually got lucky and was accepted into 9rules after I had only been writing on this website for about a week. Keep in mind I’ve been writing on the web for about a year, so this was not my first attempt at blogging and I knew what would work and what wouldn’t.

Blogging is a lot of fun and if you are good at it you can make a lot of money from it. As with anything, making money from blogging requires a lot of hard work and a lot of hours. It could pay off big in the long run, but only if you put in the hours now.

Oh, and today I hit 100 subscribers on my RSS feed. Awesome!

For me, this is the part I find quite difficult to achieve. It’s not that easy to get attention when you start a blog. I tried to email some bloggers but I didn’t have a good response, or at least a response. Of course there was exceptions (thanks, Yaro!) and a different language makes it harder…So that’s why a blog network can give a helpful boost of credibility.
Congratulations on your new mark by the way!

Indeed a big problem is just getting that momentum started. Once you get it though you will begin to roll and encounter some plateaus but with small changes as the site grows you will see continue growth.

Ben: I’m glad your membership in the Network has been working out for you since this was the purpose of creating the Network in the first place.

Mariano: Just keep writing, no one has become successful overnight. And just because people don’t respond doesn’t mean they didn’t see your site, you never know, they might be keeping their eye on it.

Both of you are right. In the end, one writes for self pleasure (at least it should be that way), so I’ll keep on writing. Thanks for the advice!

Congratulations! I just surfed onto your blog from the 9rules homepage, so I guess I’m adding to your success story with 9rules :)

I’m facing the same goals and obstacles to overcome starting my own blog too. Best of luck (and blogging) to both of us!

Ben - Well done! You are doing better than me with the Six Figure Blogging Course affiliate program so you have inspired me to try out the old “big fat colourful button” method and see how it goes.
