Success, finally
I am going to assume most of you had never heard of me until a few weeks ago. Actually, you might not have heard of me until just now when you clicked a link to come to my website. I’m certainly not one of the “famous” bloggers - famous in the blogosphere really isn’t that big of an accomplishment, is it? My blogs log 300-500 unique sessions every day. Not very impressive, especially when major blogs are logging hundreds of thousands of page views in a day and it takes me a month to hit 25,000 pageviews. But still, I consider this my first successful blog.
It’s successful both in terms of traffic and revenue. It certainly doesn’t match Darren’s reported $30,000 a month, but for me it’s the start of something big. I think I can thank 9rules for the help in getting this blog off the ground.
Why is this blog successful?
9rules generates most of my traffic, and through that traffic I get people linking to me and mentioning my posts. 9rules does exactly what they aim to do - they select the best content on the web, regardless of how well known it is, and include it on their website. In turn, the bloggers, whether they’re big names or small, receive more traffic and recognition for their hard work.
The traffic is important for generating revenue. When I posted my link to Six Figure Blogging in a recent post I got 170 clicks and of those clicks 2 people purchased the Six Figure Blogging course. If my site was only getting 50 unique sessions a day it would have taken me a week to get enough clicks to make two sales. Since then I’ve made another sale from the button on my sidebar. Without traffic, revenue is only a dream. The total for December (which isn’t even halfway over) comes to $305.00.
I’ve also started to include a few Google ads on the site. To date they’ve generated a whopping $0.37. I know it’s not much, but still, to make any money from something I enjoy doing is great.
How can you create a successful blog?
Pick a topic you’re passionate about, otherwise you won’t write regularly. Write original content. Email other bloggers and let them know that your site is out there. Comment on blogs that you read regularly. Do whatever you can to become part of the community.
You can always try to submit your website to 9rules or write for other networks, but these networks are getting harder and harder to get into. I actually got lucky and was accepted into 9rules after I had only been writing on this website for about a week. Keep in mind I’ve been writing on the web for about a year, so this was not my first attempt at blogging and I knew what would work and what wouldn’t.
Blogging is a lot of fun and if you are good at it you can make a lot of money from it. As with anything, making money from blogging requires a lot of hard work and a lot of hours. It could pay off big in the long run, but only if you put in the hours now.
Oh, and today I hit 100 subscribers on my RSS feed. Awesome!
