The college entrepreneur’s guide to picking a business idea
In today’s highly competitive world, coming up with an excellent business idea requires a lot of thinking and creativity. It must be something catchy, unspoiled, and as much as possible, unique. But this shouldn’t mean picking a capital-expensive venture with all the high-end gadgets and tedious work.
If you’re a college entrepreneur, small business can mean a hassle-free ride.
A sound business idea should have the following characteristics:
No or low capital venture. If you’re short of budget, it’s not practical to conceptualize a business that would make you spend every single buck in your wallet. Choose the simplest and cost-efficient ways to startup by making use of what you already have.
Can be managed as passively as possible. Since you’re a student, your academic load shouldn’t be compromised by your biz. Keep in mind that learning is more important at this point in your life, and so your venture must not require too much concentration.
Brings in business all year round (not just seasonal). Think of a biz that’s perennially “IN” or something that never goes out of fashion. This is important so as to avoid losing assets and keep your drive going. Examples include carwash services, fitness centers, beauty parlors, etc.
Has a strong target market. Identify what kind/s of people your business will cater to – man or woman, young or old, rich or poor – name it. As much as possible, however, it’s best to aim for the mainstream and suit your services to their needs.
As little competition as possible. You don’t want to contend with tens of same-business owners and gain less. To solve this, survey your area (or target market) and see what businesses abound and lack. What do you think is a good business to setup with the kind of crowd you have? Ask yourself that.
