Upromise has just announced that it’s accepting applications for the next school year’s round of scholarship awards. Their fund is estimated at about $500,000 in total – double what they had last year – to be given away to be given away to 200 students at $2,500 each. While it’s not the biggest in terms of individual grant, the relatively high number of possible recipients elevates your chance of being accepted. What’s more, students across all disciplines are welcome to apply.

Application

Students can visit upromise.com/scholarship and apply online by February 28, 2009. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

* Be a Upromise member or child of a Upromise member (joining is free at www.upromise.com)
* Have a household income of $65,000 or less
* Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)
* Be a high school senior or graduate who plans to enroll during the 2009-2010 academic year, or a student already enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school
* Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident residing in one of the 50 U.S states or Washington, D.C.

Awards

Awards are to be used for education-related expenses. They are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the Scholarship each year they meet eligibility requirements provided the Scholarship is offered in subsequent years. For now, the awards are for undergraduate study only.

More information is available at http://upromise.com/scholarship.

Competition for scholarships can be fierce, so it’s sometimes ideal to try to find ones that are offered exclusively to certain groups – for example, minorities. The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) gives away 4 types of grants every year, the first is open to everyone, and the other three are for those of Asian, African-American, and Hispanic heritage. It’s a non-profit organization only loosely affiliated with the fast-food chain we all grew up with. McDonalds is their biggest donor, but other companies and individuals pitch in to keep it running.

There are separate specific requirements and application forms for each that can be found here, but the general eligibility requirements according to their website are that a student should:

- Be a high school senior
- Be younger than 21 years old
- Be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a full course of study
- Be a legal U.S. resident
- Live in a participating RMHC Chapter’s geographic area
- Submit a complete application and all required documentation by the deadline on the application
- Meet any additional eligibility requirements outlined by each scholarship program
- Verification of enrollment each year at the student’s accredited post-secondary institution

You’ll have enough time to prepare as the deadline for the next school year falls on February 16, 2009.

If you don’t qualify to RMHC, try those given by your local government, companies based in your state, your church (if any), charitable institutions and other pro-education groups. Good luck.

Here’s the unintended second part of my entrepreneur scholarship blog post series which was made known to me through a Google Ad recently. Following up my post on the upcoming and not-terribly-hard-to-get NFIB scholarship, I present to you the McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneur scholarship. While it’s a scholarship for entrepreneurs, it is of a different breed due to its payout and requirements.

The McKelvey Scholarship is an award for serious high school senior entrepreneurs who are attending an accredited US institution. There are a host of other requirements as well as follow:

Own and operate a business or non profit organization for a year or more

Have at least one paid employee that does not include a partner or yourself

Have sales revenue if you’re a for profit business

Provide substantial documentation of the above when asked for

Agree to participate in a telephone interview, if selected as a finalist

Winners must attend the summer e-Venture program (2009 in St. Louis, MO)

Scholarship Applications due by January 25, 2009.

Right off the bat, it’s easy to see the differences. This award pays out up to $10,000 per year as well and seems to be much more competitive and lucrative. Additionally, the requirement of an employee and documention suggests that you’ll have to have a serious revenue generating business.

Another unique aspect of the program is the requirement for the winner to attend the E-Venture Program. The E-venture program is a unique 3 day networking event that everyone should really want to go to, and feel lucky for attending given the opportunity. The networking with like minded peers and business leaders could lead to valuable conversations, leads and collaboration, let alone just a great enjoyable retreat experience.

So spread the word, tell your sophomore little brother to start his business, and maybe you’ll get lucky. I love when McKelvey and NFIB are doing here, and check them out fo sho.

The recent informative College-Startup post regarding the blogging scholarship application deadline that has since passed reminded me of the NFIB scholarship that I have alluded to numerous times while blogging here. NFIB is a national small business association that offers an annual YEA award (Young Entrepreneur Award) that can provide $1,000 to $10,000 in tuition assistance for high school seniors.

Complete information can be found online at the Young Entrepreneur Award’s website. The Deadline is December 15.

This scholarship is intended for entrepreneur minded people, regardless if you actually own a business. Through the large, awesome facebook group of winners from previous years, there are many entrepreneurs and many bright students that just show promise that win the award. I personally know winners from both categories of people. So nobody reading this blog has an excuse not to apply for this scholarship if you meet the requirements, since all you need is the entrepreneurial spirit.

Most importantly, do not be timid to apply, especially if you have an online based business or a venture that doesn’t seem ‘serious enough’ – like lawn mowing or a tiny freelance computer repair business. I think 75% of winners have such businesses, so you’ll have a good chance with a well written paper and good application.

After reading about the award a couple years ago, I too thought there’s no way in chance of getting it since my business was hardly a business, and it would be easier not to seek out a reference. Then I applied, then I won, and then I received a national NFIB award.

So if I haven’t got my point across, apply for NFIB if you can, or inform business minded students to do so. NFIB has a large bankroll that it’s dying to disperse to entre candidates. So December 15 get your app in, and comment thanking me when you win.
