How to handle success
In psychology, an individual’s handling of success depends on how he sees himself. If he thinks he has fixed capability, he has a tendency to do bad next time just so he could meet the low expectations he had set for himself. But if he thinks he is flexible, he could improve next time.
In the business field, people rarely fall into the first category. They know they want success so every move they make points to their goals. Succeeding is indeed a sweet thing, but it has intoxicated many who have gone to pieces after getting it.
It’s definitely all right to be elated. It would be absurd not to relish the success you got. But after bliss, many tend to let it get into their heads and be excessively proud. This is when success turns into a deadly poison. Success can make one over confident.
Overconfidence makes you so sure you’ll succeed again the next time. It also will make you more self-centered. Counter this by reflecting inwards. Ask yourself: did I get this success only by my own efforts? Who are those you should thank for helping you get on top? Remember, every successful human has a foot on someone else’s shoulder.
Overconfidence can also lower your standard – instead of competing with yourself, you make yourself as the yardstick of success. Don’t let this happen. We never stop learning, and so should we never stop improving. Put it in your head that if you’re really worth the success you got, you should still get it next time but on a higher ground.
Don’t get distracted and lose focus on the things that need your attention. Once you get on top of the competition, more people will get to know you. Though it may get you the status you are dreaming of, it’ll also put you in a broadened risk. Your competitors will surely get a better look at you and will be keener than ever to spot your flaws and weaknesses.
After you get high with your success, forget it and go back to your normal self – hardworking, focused and alert – or be even better. Also don’t forget that you can still fail. After all, business is not just about staying afloat, it’s about bobbing up after bobbing down.
