Warning signs that you’re getting the client from hell

December 23rd, 20070 comments

Business people who have enough experience know that customers aren’t always right. Save resources, time, and patience by knowing which clients to avoid.
Say “No, Thanks” to clients who:

Want to change too many things on the contract. Some clients are just overly and vaguely demanding. If you can’t seem to agree easily on the contract, better take it as an indication that you won’t get your way easily with them.

Evade payment or are slow payers. Your clients only pay after you’ve virtually tried contacting them through all communication lines available. And when you at last reach them, they still have the nerve to haggle on their dues.

Are inconsiderately disorganized. If clients give you orders at the last minute and expect you to be able to finish it on time, you’ll be better off without them. All business establishments, even freelance entrepreneurs, have their own limitations. If clients are too inconsiderate to acknowledge that, tell tem – as politely as you could - to go find another company.

Give no feedback. Business needs good communication between clients and service providers. If clients don’t return phone calls, e-mails and other attempts at the communication you make, don’t rest so assured that everything will be alright.

Give improper feedback. As opposed to the no-feedback clients, this kind of clients also comes from hell. They don’t know how to criticize constructively and are easily angered. They won’t just lower your confidence; they would also turn you bitter-sour.

Are never pleased with your service. They are unrealistically demanding. They won’t listen to your excuses however valid they may be. There’s a big difference between a client who is hard to please and a client who is impossible to please. The former should challenge you to improve your service, while the latter only would burn you out.

Are know-it-alls. They won’t listen to any of your advices as they think they’re far better than you are. They’re hard to reach because they’re stuck up in the clouds.

Have bad mouths. Clients who badmouth you to others deserve a kick in the ass out of the perimeter of your establishment. They’re not only destructive to your business’ reputation but also make you lose your focus on your endeavors.
