Why you should have a business card

November 30th, 20070 comments

A business card goes a long way in establishing the legitimacy of your company. It makes it look successful and trustworthy, but more importantly, it makes referrals a breeze. Imagine being asked for your name and contact number by a client’s acquaintance. Is writing your name and contact information on a piece of table napkin appropriate? A business card is one of those things you should have handy just in case. After all, your clients can’t file table napkins into their rolodexes.

You may not want to hear this, but for networking purposes, it’s almost like you are your 2×4 inch card.

Any good business card contains information about you and your company. Specifically, your full name, your company’s name, phone numbers, email address, and website. Being able to trade so much information quickly is essential, and gives the client the impression that you take your work seriously. Your card, much like any other advert, should be noticeable. Standing out from a sea of other business cards is a great help. A brief description of what you do should be included as well. Never assume that people will remember who you are or what you do.

So why do you need a business card? Only if you want more business, and if you don’t fancy writing your name on tissue paper. You wouldn’t want your clients to accidentally blow their noses on your name and number now, would you?

As a follow-up to this post, I’ll be writing soon about “How to Design the Perfect Business Card”, which will contain a wealth of tips for both designers and non-designers.
