4 Main Disadvantages of Outsourcing
We’ve mentioned the advantages of outsourcing in an earlier post. The disadvantages, however, should not be overlooked. Outsourcing isn’t something you do for its own sake; you do it because you know that it will lead to more productivity and in effect, profitability. So think it through. Here are a few things to remember about the negative side to outsourcing:
Outsourcing can be a threat. If another party is keeping your books and answering your phone calls, they’ll have access to certain secrets. Numbers, product details, certain operations… With this in mind, you will have to be very careful about what you outsource and to whom.
You lose talent inside within your company. If you keep relegating the work to someone else, you won’t likely master or develop the skills yourself. You’d deprive yourself of experience, which you would have you gained had you not handed the task over to someone else.
You lose control. Precisely because you’ve handed the reigns to someone else. It is much harder to manage persons who aren’t directly under your control or who aren’t…well, you.:
- If you’re outsourcing to someone outside your area, the matter of geography is itself a problem. It’s hard enough as it is managing your company from headquarters. Managing a part of your business from an ocean away can lead to gaps in communication.
- A failure to deliver means you suffer the consequences regardless of contracts and agreements.
Hidden costs can spell your doom. That means the cost of hammering out the contract and coordinating with other people. Risks are –in more ways than one –shared. If they commit a mistake, you’ll feel the ripples much sooner than anyone else. You can be subject to misunderstandings, delays, and other mishaps.
Now that I’ve lined all those up for you, think carefully. Outsourcing may be very good for your business. But as a fledgling endeavor, you have to be sure that you build the value of your company from the inside-out and not the other way around.

Outsourcing could be great but you’re right when you said that the disadvantages shouldn’t be overlooked.
You could actually do things yourself to develop your skills.
