9rules kicked me out

February 15th, 200642 Comments

Well, I knew this was coming. Along with Girlspoke and Chris Pearson, I’ve been kicked out of 9rules. The reason being that I am involved with BlogMedia.

I’m not sure why this is a problem, as College Startup isn’t part of BlogMedia - I am a designer there, and it doesn’t effect my membership in 9rules. The contract that I agreed to when I joined 9rules didn’t say anything about including my website in other content networks, and all I’m doing is designing for one. The time I spend designing for Blog Media doesn’t change anything with College Startup or my involvement with 9rules. Here is what I promised to do:

You promise to maintain the standards you have set for your site and will strive to continuously improve the quality of the content to allow for a better experience for you, your audience and the network. You also promise to display the 9rules button on the pages of your site to effectively show your support for the network you are a part of.

Maybe if I had broken that promise then I would understand why I was kicked out, but there is no mention that the quality of my content has dropped. Here is why I was kicked out (excerpt from the email I received from Paul Scrivens):

…due to your involvement with BlogMedia I must ask that you remove the 9rules badge from College Startup. Please understand that this is a business decision and not some vendetta that we have against you and I understand you have kept College Startup separate from BlogMedia.

Other people are designing blogs for other networks, why aren’t they getting kicked out? Aren’t they involved in that network if they’re doing designs?

No one at 9rules ever approached my and told me my involvement with BlogMedia was a problem and could lead to me being removed from 9rules. I think they’re worried that 9rules members were leaking information to Blog Network Watch, which is part of BlogMedia. Of course, I wasn’t. Others were and they’re still in the network.

At least I’m in good company, Chris - a fellow member of BlogMedia, got the axe too. Girlspoke - one of Scrivs’ favorite blogs - got kicked out too. Maybe they’re kicking out all of the members they like in order to make the network better…haha.

I’m not really upset with the situation, I just thought I would let everyone know what was going on. I feel like everything I wanted out of 9rules I got. I met smart people, I got some new readers, and I learned a bit about blogging. At this point, I know the screen names of people I want to talk to, very little traffic to College Startup comes from 9rules, and the 9rules badge means less and less everytime they accept another mundane blog.

9rules kicked me out

Mike Rundle | February 15, 2006

Hey Ben-

As referenced in other entries around the web today, this new policy was put into effect because we feel that we cannot be associated (either directly or indirectly) with companies or brands that may negatively affect how people perceive 9rules. We have received email complaints from various readers, asking why we have sites in our Network that are part of other networks who don’t represent the same ideals we do, and this is our answer.

This doesn’t have to do with the fact that you are simply designing sites for them, but that you are listed as a staff member of their company, as their Senior Designer and principal blogger of the not-yet-launched problogging.com. Doing client/consulting work is one thing, being hired as their Senior Designer is quite another as I’m sure you’ll agree.

Like Paul said, this is not a personal decision at all — it’s just something that needs to be done in order to grow the 9rules brand and image in a positive manner.

Very best,
Mike

Ben | February 15, 2006

Yes, but everyone in 9rules has jobs - people are designing and programming for other companies and blogs. No one in 9rules contacted me regarding the conflict before kicking me out. Wouldn’t it have been best to alert members that taking jobs with other blog networks would be considered a problem? When did you guys send out the email to everyone letting them know of the new membership agreement? I never got it.

I remember a forum post where Paul Stamatiou asked whether writing for one of the tech blogs in another network would be okay and everyone seemed to agree that it wasn’t a problem. Why the sudden change of heart?

College Startup was not part of Blog Media, I don’t think what people do to make money should have an effect on their membership in 9rules.

David | February 15, 2006

Mike,
So did Bryan from Avalonstar also receive this email? He is one of the founders of Yopos is he not? What about Om Malik? He’s a member of Federated Media is he not? Give me a break I don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.

Mike Rundle | February 15, 2006

Ben - The difference being that we received complaints from people asking why we’d allow people associated with BlogMedia in our Network, not one complaint, but several. For business reasons, we do not want to be associated (even remotely associated) with any of those entities.

Mike Rundle | February 15, 2006

David, those two affiliations do not tarnish our brand like an affiliation with Blog Media or Erati Media does, and has. Like mentioned in the previous email, we have received complaints from readers who were upset 9rules Network members were associated with those two networks, therefore action has been taken.

Ben | February 15, 2006

Why didn’t anyone from 9rules contact me first to alert me that there was a problem? No one has answered that question yet…

David | February 15, 2006

Interesting, bad business decision Mike. I would disagree. Federated Media is essentially an advertising network very similar to what you are already planning.

So this is looking more and more like a personal vendetta against Erati Media even though none of these people are in Erati media, but merely do work for BlogMedia.

I personally think your comments about how Blogmedia is tarnishing your brand are about as unfair as could be. The only comments about BlogMedia came from within your little private forum. And you folks stoked the fire on this one.

There are others in 9rules that have worked with me on various projects and im sad to say a lot of folks are guilty of blogmedia involvement. More than you know.

Im not about to “out” those people. That would clearly be on the level of the leafy little cult.

bryan (innocent bystander) | February 15, 2006

Ben,

I think you have a great site, and if you weren’t receiving that much traffic from that network anyway, I say move on. Your content is solid enough that you can stay with that other network, despite the complaints, and you still will do fine. Keep up the great work. I am an avid follower.

I agree with you though, it’s kind of odd that they just booted you without talking with you about this rogue affiliation. You would have thought if they truly valued you site in their structure, they would have asked you to choose. I am guessing that because you are making money with the other one, you would have dropped 9 rules in a heartbeat, but at least they could have been a little more tactful about it.

Despite the claim that there is no personal vendetta, it sounds a lot like a clique action to me.

-just my two cents (which added to a quarter *might* get you a cup of joe)

David | February 15, 2006

The sad and sorry interesting twist is that Im not sure Ben has made money yet. Oh no he made some money. Wowzers. This is all just a horrible evil. Ben I applaud you for being a big man through all of this. Remember that which is not destroyed but grows and learns remains stronger and becomes the better person. You have been a pleasure to work for and a good pal.

Mike Rundle | February 15, 2006

In the end, it’s up to us. 9rules is a Network of sites that uphold the values are brand stands for, and if we feel that our brand is being tarnished in any way, then we have the right to do what we feel is necessary.

Ben, you did not receive notice before today because we just made the policy public today. You can leave 9rules if you want, and we can ask you to leave if we want, it works both ways. David, like mentioned many times previously, we’ve received email complaints about our members being associated with you, Erati Media, and Blog Media, and we took action so our brand wouldn’t be hurt any more.

Ben and David, if either of you want to discuss this more, please email me….. mike at 9rules.com.

Matt Jones | February 15, 2006

It doesn’t matter what network you’re in. It’s the content you put out.

I’ll definitely be hanging around your site no matter what network or no network you decide to go with.

Keep up the good work!

Chris P. | February 15, 2006

Ben, your clear thinking through this ought to inspire even an uninterested bystander. I’m impressed, and I think you’ve shown what a stand-up guy you are throughout this process.

The answers you’ve been given aren’t, in my opinion, satisfactory, but the bottom line here is that College-Startup is in a class by itself anyway. 9rules had the ability to vault sites to a new level back in September or so of last year. I don’t feel that the “meteoric” factor is still there, so you’re absolutely correct in saying that you got your money’s worth, so to speak.

Peace, dude. Keep up the good work. You run a killer site.

Matt | February 15, 2006

Funny - no one ever complains to me.

Hey, you’re on my list of interesting sites to read. And it does look like David and 9rules are HIDING SOMETHING and don’t want to have anything interesting on their network. But the truth comes out eventually…..

But, this should inspire you, get you more juiced to do far more, do more, kick more ass; so that in a year they will be regretting this move, kind of like people regretting not investing in Microsoft in 1985.

Keep it up.

Jon

[…] This just in from an eroneous search of Technorati with the words “Paul Scrivens” in the title: two more blogs have been kicked out of 9rules, College Startup and Personified, bringing the current 9rules death toll to 3. […]

Michael | February 16, 2006

I have been fortunate enough to work with Ben on a project (currently under construction) and he has been professional and great to work with throughout.

As for the decision of 9Rules to no longer keep College-Startup in their staple of evergrowing sites. It is their business and they can run it however they like. However my comment would be that if they trusted Ben enough to bring him into the fold in the first place, it seems to be a poor business and PR move to boot him from the network without first contacting him or giving him a chance to make a decision as to whether he wanted to stay with 9Rules under the new policy.

Continued good luck with the blog Ben, and I look forward to continuing our project together.

ABCGi | February 16, 2006

Get over it. Create your own network then!

And besides doing work for another network is a closer relationship in some ways than your blog being part of their network - IMO.

Colin D. Devroe | February 16, 2006

I just want to make a quick note here about the ‘fair warning’ issue. Ben I’m not sure how much involvement you have in our announcements forum, or if you get the mass emails that go out to our members prior to us making a decision like this, but we’ve said that we were going to make this move some time ago.

If this came to you as out of the blue, it was probably because you missed the announcements in the forum I think.

I’m still subscribed btw. Keep up the great work here.

Ben | February 16, 2006

Colin - There was no mass email.

Jason | February 16, 2006

It looks to me like the way Mike & 9rules has handled this has the potential to tarnish their reputation more than any perceived connection to BlogMedia. I was a big fan of 9rules until this. Consider them Dugg.

it does look like David and 9rules are HIDING SOMETHING and don’t want to have anything interesting on their network

That could be one of the most ignorant statements I’ve ever read. Specifically the part about 9rules not wanting to have anything interesting on their network.

[…] I recommend that you go and check out  what’s happening to a few of the sites in 9rules [Link is Here] - I wonder how many more blogs have been affected.  I find it rather odd that they’re doing this - it’s not that they’ve got blogs in other networks or that they’re slamming 9rules.  Guilt by association - I mean most all of us have jobs outside the sphere of blogging and might actually work for others to build templates/internet stuff… so how did 9rules figure that taking people like Ben out of the network was a good thing?   […]

You still have my readership. I found your site from a Blogroll, not 9rules.

Dan Marques | February 16, 2006

I barely ever read any other 9rules blogs but your blog is one of the only blogs on the net at the top of my list. Odds are I will probably never read a 9rules blog again due to their poor business ethics.

Keep up the good fight…let me know if you need anything…

On a related note, I will be in a conference with some big bloggers in a few weeks and I will be sure to let the major influences know about this.

Personalmente, me veía venir algo asi. 9rules seguramente se creó para ser vendido a algún multimedia a la manera de Weblogs Inc. pero evidentemente están cambiando su estrategia ya que no resulta. The only thing “tarnishing” the 9rules brand is their poor PR skills.

The more you try to defend your actions publicly, the more guilty you are percieved. If you felt your actions were proper, no need to explain any further.

I’ve officially lost respect for the 9rules crew….

‘We have received email complaints from various readers’

Too many good things are destoryed because of a few complainers. Various tells me it wasn’t that many that complained. Sorry to hear you got booted - it won’t affect my being subscribed to you (and I don’t think that’s how I got to your site anyways).

[…] In light of the “9rules purge” out blogs problem I thought I’d write an article about why I think there are advantages to being part of a blog network. Since 9rules asked Chris and me to leave I have seen people writing that they’d never join 9rules after this, and I think that’s a mistake. […]

“Ben, you did not receive notice before today because we just made the policy public today.”

Reminds me of a TV sketch where the traffic warden paints in the no parking signs after around a car that is already parked.

How was the webmaster able to know about the policy change?

I would never claim to make a decision based on “complaints”, I would investigate the issue because of the complaints but then make my own decision and stand by it, not hide behind undisclosed emails.

This is not a way to protect a brand, you play fair and have full disclosure when dealing with bloggers in your network.

This is a cool blog and if I had a blog network (am I the only blogger who doesn’t) then you would be welcome to be in mine no matter who you partnered with. In fact, that is your business and who would I be to say what you do outside of the blog that is in the network.

As I write this I am getting more angry, this is really out of order. These 9 rules dudes sound like a bunch of control freaks, you can’t argue that it’s the policy when you change the policy and take action without a chance to be even aware of the policy let alone act on it.

I doesn’t seem like this is just business as how does the network benefit by not having a great blog like this in it?

[…] Now that BlogMedia owns one of the most influential blog news sites has to make Mike Rundle and the 9rules gang a little uncomfortable. Especially after saying …this new policy was put into effect because we feel that we cannot be associated (either directly or indirectly) with companies or brands that may negatively affect how people perceive 9rules… […]

[…] All the best to BlogMedia Inc again, yes people have been harsh on them but Matt Craven has impressed me and I can’t wait to see more! […]

Fuck 9rules, I’m not going there again. Isn’t the point of the network to combine and consolidate good blogs and blog posts? So what if one blog is in more than one network… Seems lame to get kicked out cause of a few whiners. Keep up the good posting Ben! :-)
