Be An Online Researcher
In the previous post, I talked about how you should capitalize on what you know and use it to your advantage. Along those lines, here is another idea which will make you good money. What is it that every college student in America has access to? The Internet. What is it that every student learns how to do in higher levels of education? Do research. There you go, combine these two things together and you have one potential income generating activity.
There are countless companies out there who are in urgent need of certain information that can actually be found by anyone with the time and patience to root it out. However, these companies may not have the luxury of time or the needed employees to do their research for them. That is where you come in. With your (supposedly) finely honed research skills, your Internet-savvy, and your relatively low rates, companies will see you as the optimal solution to their information needs.
So what exactly does it take to start up an online research business? All you need is your computer, an Internet connection, and of course, advertising. The last factor is the most crucial, especially when you are at the early stages. There are a number of ways you can advertise your services. This is perhaps the most competitive part of the business – how to get the target clientele to notice you in a very crowded market place.
One way to go about it is to focus on a specific field of expertise. It could be your major in college or something that you are really passionate about. Or if you want, you can be a jack-of-all-trades and spread your areas of interest. The important thing is for the market to notice you. You can advertise online through sites and forums. Craigslist would be a good place to start. You can also post in blogs – yours and your friends. Though the work would be done online, that doesn’t mean advertising has to be solely online. Make use of the campus newspaper. Utilize all the bulletin boards you see on campus. Look for local newspapers that carry free advertising.
The importance of social and academic networks cannot be overemphasized in this sort of business. This is especially significant if you choose to focus on highly specialized fields. Your network of contacts will probably generate more customers than your other advertisement campaigns. Get your sorority or fraternity to advertise for you – let your alumni know about your start-up. Other school organizations can also serve in the same way.
Once you’ve got your business underway, you will realize that though the money is good, the sense of achievement that you get out of this job is better. Seriously though, gathering all that information and giving it to someone who really needs it and will make something out of it just makes you feel as if you had done something worthwhile in itself. Of course, the money is always a BIG plus.
