Defining Your Big Payoff and How to Get There (Part 2)

April 25th, 20080 comments

Let’s focus on the business aspect, especially if you’re nursing your own, private endeavor. Your business is a dynamic and living thing. Allowing it to grow and taking care of it can be one aspect of getting your hands on that mythic Big Payoff we’ve been talking about. Remember, work is about the money, unless you’re in the lap of luxury and working only for fun. But it isn’t about working for the money; it’s getting your money to work for you.

Once again, planning is a huge part of any goal and any goal should be very specific. Take control.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when taking big or baby steps towards a sizeable paycheck.

If you want to expand, do it wisely. Don’t get into unfamiliar territory without doing your homework. Gaining new clients or delivering new services means updating your supply or surrounding yourself with qualified people when your skill level can’t keep up with your business.

Focus on high impact marketing: set up a website that you update often or add affiliate programs to your site or flyer. It’s easy to throw money at ineffective marketing.

Do your research. You and your business aren’t islands and trends outside can very well influence both. If you sell on eBay, that big paycheck may mean selling what’s on the hot items list. You may also want to do aggressive selling during the holidays, since it’s that time of year when people buy impulsively.

Cut your losses. If you’re young and inexperienced, make sure that you adopt the best practices. Take on a mentor and ask for advice from the experts; don’t ever think that you know everything. Take the necessary steps to avoid falling into the pit of your own delusions; you’ll avoid wasting money when you know your limits and adopt an attitude of openness and learning.

Learn to let go. As with exercise, taking a rest is just as important as working. Burning out with only deter you from reaching your desires. You will know that you are doing the right thing when you’re having fun.
