Everything’s possible: Rich kids who did it on their own

February 23rd, 20090 comments

When you’re in your teens, your thoughts revolve mostly around high school, getting dates on Saturday nights, and being invited to parties, right? Well, not everyone. Some kids have loftier goals. For example, earning 10x more than their parents’ income, or maybe even higher. A few of them even manage to do it.

Michael Dunlop of the audaciously named blog RetireAt21.com made an inspiring list of 20 very successful young Internet entrepreneurs. Some of the youngest people in his list started out their businesses when they were 13. Amazing stuff, and makes you wonder what future, even tech-savvier generations will accomplish. (I shudder to think)

Their business ventures are quite varied. They range from blogging, to launching their own affiliate networks, to selling domains, to creating MySpace themes, to maintaining several high-traffic websites. There’s even an offline venture concerning a bottled water company. Hey, whatever works, right?

One of the most recognizable sites is probably MyYearBook.com, started by Catherine Cook. It currently has over 5 million members, and just now as I look at it, the site indicates almost 16,000 new sign-ups for yesterday alone. That may be far from Facebook’s numbers, but she was able to attract a substantial number of people and create her own niche social network.
