Odd scholarships
Do you have a twin that you can stand to be with without strangling? Are you uber-creative and can think out-of-the-box? Can you play (or at least interested in studying to play) the bagpipe? Are you open to the thought of going to the prom with your date wearing a fashionable duct tape dress?
There are many ways to get a scholarship. Some don’t even need much brainpower and a few are not at all competitive. I’ve recently come across a list of actual scholarship grants that seem to depend more on a colorful personality than grades or need. The requirements might surprise you. Here’s an example:
“Duck Callers. OK, this contest may border on the goofy, but the top prize is $1,500 in scholarship money, so if you’ve got a knack for calling ducks we say you’ve got nothing to lose but your dignity (and travel fare to Arkansas). The Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest is open to any high school senior in the U.S. Participants have 90 seconds to demonstrate their best hail, feed, comeback and mating calls. The top three placers also receive commemorative jackets, so get quackin’, er crackin’, because $1,500 isn’t exactly chicken feed. (Me, I’m still looking for that ever elusive Bad Pun Scholarship.)”
