Outsourcing: A Boon for Small Businesses

July 15th, 20080 comments

I knew an independent film producer who did all her work on her own. She got very ill because of the stress; this forced her to relegate the marketing and minor administrative tasks to others, namely myself. Since then, she’s been able to concentrate more fully on acquiring the necessary funding for her films, on actually running her business, and getting enough free time to recover. She hasn’t been horribly ill since.

For your sake, I hope you won’t wait for something terrible to happen before considering delegating tasks to other people you can rely on:

Outsourcing allows you to concentrate on the areas that really bring in the dollars. This means that you can give the non-core yet important administrative tasks to people who actually specialize in them. You can concentrate on work that will serve your customer and have time to manage your priorities.

Expertise is at your fingertips. Administrative tasks, like bookkeeping customer relations, that you aren’t necessarily good or efficient at can be relegated to somebody who is an expert.

In turn, you reduce risk. They are also more apt at avoiding risks within their area of expertise.

You’ll have more control over your business. Letting go of certain tasks (such as accounting, finance, and customer relations) frees you up to do other things. With somebody competent handling your other operations, you won’t have to worry about answering calls when you’re busy in class, doing your homework, or hatching a new project.

You improve service.
With somebody to cover you, your business can provide 24 hour support reliably.

You may want to have a hand in everything in your business but it is also important to remember that your business is growing. If you decide to concentrate on all the nitty gritty, you’ll likely have little or no time for the big picture. If you spend some time finding and training reliable contractors to do the legwork, and you find the ones that work really well with you, you’ll actually be owning your business rather than working in it.
