Sell Stuff On eBay

This may seem an over used, overrated idea but why do you think the site still exists? More than simply existing, it is actually flourishing! That is because there is a demand for the stuff sold on there. And where there is a demand, there is money to be made. Of course, not everyone who tries the eBay waters find it warm enough and succeed in their business venture. As with many other things in life, there is a good way to approach this venture. Here are a few tips to help you get going.

1. Do Research!

Another cliche perhaps, but it works. Research extensively on what products seem to be in demand at the moment – watches, clothes, or collectibles maybe. Find out what you want to sell, then make sure you know about all other similar products on auction. This way, you can be competitive.

2. Know how eBay works.

Perhaps even before you do research on your competition, you should know eBay in and out. First of all learn how to list a product. Then learn about the bidding process. More so, learn all about pricing and shipping. Shipping is quite separate from eBay but it definitely is important to the process as a whole. You need to know which shipping companies are most cost effective and what kinds of things they allow to be shipped. You should also know about taxes and other fees that may be charged, depending on the item and the location of shipping.

3. Focus your attention on your listing.

Here is where you should let all your creative juices run free. With all the listings in eBay, you need to employ all the attention grabbing techniques that you can think of. Use pictures! Show your product in the best light possible, but be careful to show what you are really selling so as not to be guilty of false advertising. Pay close attention to details when working on the product write up. Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes and think of everything that a buyer would want to know about the product. Be open, friendly, and approachable.

4. Offer a wide variety of options.

This applies to both payment and shipping. You would want to reach a wide range of customers and one way to do this is to give them as many options as possible. Try to offer payment through COD, credit card, PayPal, etc. The same goes with shipping, although of course you will be more limited in that respect due to operating costs.

5. Be professional.

This is perhaps one of the most important factors that will determine your success or failure as an eBay seller. Selling stuff on eBay is just like any other business – the more customer-oriented you are, the better. You should show how serious you are in offering superior service. You cannot keep changing your mind nor can you go back on delivery dates. These are surefire ways of bringing your rating down. As you know, ratings are quite critical in the eBay world.

Two comments on this article:

First, selling on e-bay often doesn’t pay off unless you can do it in quantity. But it would be hard to store an inventory of products in your dormroom.

Second, the key to doing well on ebay is to either dominate a major niche or focus on a micro-niche that no one else covers. I’d recommend the micro-niche approach which takes more work upfront, but at least you don’t have to fight with the big guys.
