Staying motivated

March 22nd, 20067 Comments

Anyone else have trouble staying motivated? Right now, when I look at the work piling up I want to walk away from the computer and ignore it. Of course, then I’d have more work when I got back.

If you have tips on how you get through the day without walking away from the computer trying to avoid work, leave a comment. Maybe I need to make a list of things to do and start checking them off as I get them done.

Sorry for the short post, I have to get back to procrastinating.

I know what you mean, and sometimes you just need a break from it all. It helps me a lot of times if I’m just not getting work done to get up and go do something else for a few hours (or days if your schedule permits).

I also find that once every few months I just need to get the hell off the computer for a week or so. Sometimes you get so passionate about one specific activity (the web, drumming, etc) that you overdose yourself with it.

Making a list of a great place to start. Multiple times per week I will be sitting in one of my morning classes and before the class starts, I will just list everything that I can think of that I need to do whether it be homework, meetings, business related, or just returning phone calls. It helps me to stay focused on what I need to accomplish. Of course writing a list is great, but actually being able to focus to accomplish the tasks is half the battle. Some days your just in the mood to be really productive and some days not.

Maybe like Kyle suggested, you need a short break from the world of the computer and business. Just take a day or two off and do only the bare minimum that you need to such as your school work. Let everything else just rest on the back burner for a day.

Just removing all distractions and shutting everything else off helps me get started on projects. I’ve found David Seah’s Task Progress Tracker has helped me a lot too.

Listening to the right kind of music and just walking around and doing something else after working for a little while also helps me avoid getting bored and stay focused on a project.

I use post-it notes on the side of my desks to make sure I never escape the pressure and enjoy a moment of fun without an ounce of guilt :) .

It helps to just focus on your goals and what successes are ahead of your when you accomplish your goals. Keep on thinking of the future and your days will be filled with more motivation.

I get that all the time because, basically I’m lazy. If I can’t see myself doing something the ‘right’ way the first time, in the back of my mind says ‘wait until you get a clear vision’. Then, I move on to something else. Unfortunately, other times you have to bite the bullet and just finish the work” regardless. I’m using this ToDo list now. It helps putting deadlines on stuff to do. My best stuff happens when the adrenalin is rushing. .. ps../nice redesign.
