The Mafioso’s Guide to Doing Business
“Mafia” was considered by Sicilians to mean pride, honor, and social responsibility. It wasn’t just an organization; it was an attitude which entailed nobility and generosity. The mafioso amongst the mafia was known as men of honor. Leading life like a mafioso in the movies does not necessarily mean resorting to violence, bribery or extortion. Mafia led a life outside the law and a government which denied people a whole range of products which were considered illegal and not necessarily evil such as alcohol or gambling. They were businessmen and entrepreneurs supplying goods and services.
The Cosa Nostra was composed of crime families, each lording over a territory and working within strictures of a code. They were organized and they had their rules without which their work would have been random and pointless violence.
As a business Mafioso, you should know your niche or your territory. You, as an entrepreneur should supply goods which have a demand in the market; without some form of market research or an eye on which goods are selling like pancakes, you may quickly lose your customer base. Move with precision and purpose. Move with a definite business plan.
Have a good supply chain that will give you the necessary amount of products to sell, especially on occasions like holidays. Some of the Mafia’s ventures included an international chain of supply. You may try selling on the internet to widen your audience and expand your business.
Don’t expand without adapting your business to that change. Dons knew the danger of bending their moral code by trafficking drugs as well as the destruction wrought by it. Expanding in that way brought about bigger problems that were not sustainable, morally and business-wise.
Indeed, the mafia brought about some form of coherence in a world where the state didn’t protect or take care of its people. You should always do the same; your customers are always right. They existed out of a need, and so should you, but the difference between you and the mafia is that your business, whatever it is, shouldn’t put you in danger or force you to go on the run.
