The Pros and Cons of working from your dorm room
Student entrepreneurs usually have no choice but to run their businesses from their dormitory rooms or boarding houses. It may look like the best arrangement at first glance, but working from your dorm room also has its down sides.
( - ) Some people will think it’s unprofessional. They wouldn’t help it. You probably know that, being a consumer or client yourself. Finding out that your “office” is on third floor of XYZ Dormitory, you’re potential customer or client would inevitably somehow doubt that you’re dependable and serious in business.
( + ) You save on transportation and other expenses. You don’t have to rent another space, pay separate electricity expenses, etc. You don’t have to buy meals outside if you have stock food in your dorm room.
( - ) Distractions from annoying roommates. Sometimes you just find it hard to ignore them even when they’re not talking to you. You can’t help overhearing bits of conversation. And when they are talking to or teasing you, the civilized part of yourself just won’t let you tell them “Go to hell, please?”
( + ) Easy access to your workspace. As soon as you wake up in the morning, you can already start working on whatever business matter you left unfinished the day before. Everything you need is in your room. You don’t have to worry about taking things to and from a separate office space, and have the dilemma of leaving some things behind.
( - ) More temptations surround you. You’ve got easy access to the bed or couch when you are tempted to sleep, or to the fridge or kitchen when you’re tempted to eat.
( + ) You’re always at ease. You always feel at home because you’re home.
( - ) Tendency to jumble personal, academic, and business stuff. If all of those were in one place, you would have to exert extra effort at organizing matters mentally and physically.
( + ) Safer. You don’t have to go out a lot and expose yourself to risks outside. You have someone with you in your work place.
( - ) No place for “business” meetings. You would always have to arrange your official meetings some place else – unless it’s okay with you to receive “clients” in your dormitory.
( + ) Saves time. Because you don’t have to travel, you don’t have to waste precious time in the traffic. Actually, it saves not just time, but also effort.
