Why selling information products is a good idea
If you’ve ever bought an ebook or signed up for an online course, you probably found that information is easily at your fingertips; it’s as effortless as that for the typical user.
On the other side of the coin, put yourself in the shoes of the information provider. No free lunch, kiddies! Everything comes with a price. Setting up shop in a digital locale or otherwise, entails effort and your big idea. Creating anything –from an essay to a full-blown online business course –will require some form of research; even your process, from production to delivery, will have to be tested.
There are, however, huge advantages to producing, selling, and delivering information products such as ebooks, courses, and articles.
The old ways of producing information are precisely that: old. Not that they are obsolete, but there are a lot of benefits to producing and distributing information via the digital way. You will have no need for a printing press, or a nit-picky publisher, or an agent who wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. With an electronic copy of your book, you can be accessed from any part of the globe, by anybody with an internet connection, and be paid for the service you render. With proper planning, it usually takes less time and effort to maintain information products than it is to maintain physical ones.
Information products are a more passive way of earning your income - but there’s the initial investment of time and/or money that you need to make during production. However, once you’ve got the product set up, it usually requires very little maintenance on your part. You can work on other projects while passively cashing in from information products.
Information products can be reproduced at minimal or no cost to you. You can easily be the next national bestseller, in the new sense of the term (without having to worry about the pointless massacre of trees). With capital to spare, you may even hire contractors to create content for you. However, if you decide to create content by yourself, you will be capitalizing on something that you already have: your own creativity and know-how.
Suddenly, geography and logistics aren’t a problem. You don’t have to ship your book or tutorial (to be received in 2 weeks!) and have it delivered. It is the proverbial Star Trek transporter: near instantaneous and hassle-free delivery.
This may sound like it’s leaping from the pages of a science fiction book. It partly is. The internet has changed so many aspects of how we process and create information. Its biggest impact also lies in the near-instantaneous distribution of information.
So remember this: the average Joe –for as long as he has something original to say and has the willpower to actually say it –can be extraordinary on the Internet stage.
