Why you should diversify your business
In spite of how simple your business seems to be, it’s kind of imperative to find ways to diversify it. Diversifying, as stated in the dictionary, is expanding into new areas of business – broadening your horizons, so to speak.
See, for example, a small English learning institution that caters to foreign students. If you’re the owner/manager, dealing with people who literally don’t understand each other can be breathtaking at first, but can be daunting at the latter part, if the excitement is not sustained. Work will be a bore. To snuff out the monotony of the regular business routine, the manager might as well think of a new way to renew his excitement.
Routines are effective in almost all businesses, and there is enough enjoyment in dealing with different types of customers. But in the long run, the monotony of the job may wipe it all out.
In the given example, the manager may choose to take a different challenge and diversify by converting his English learning institution to an academic tutorial center where everybody – not just foreigners – can enroll. This doesn’t just boost profit but also widen customer base. But this is, of course, if he has the means. If not, he may opt to open his institution to locals as well.
Thinking of new business strategies makes business fun and easy, and it also minimizes risks. When thinking of diversifying, though, always remember that all changes you make to your business is for its growth. Thus, a thorough study should be made beforehand, as business is not a guess work.
Business diversification can be done in many ways (e.g., introducing new related products and services, widening your market, introducing new products to a new market, etc). If you plan to do any of those, make sure your product is effectively developed, and you have all the necessary resources already at hand.
