Easy College Money with .edu Webspace
Nearly very student at a university nowadays gets free web space with their online student accounts, which they are encouraged to use so university officials can brag about how their students “embrace technology.” The web space is probably meant to be a place where students can
- Try to learn how to build a website OR
- Create a short bio so to help them meet other students
Well, I would dare to say that the majority of a college’s student body is not interested in building websites, and regarding the personal page with a bio, I have one word: Facebook.
So really, it’s hard not to blame students without online marketing knowledge to completely forget about their online web space. But if you have an student account and you want to a little easy money, make a website now and sell some .edu links.
Some History
Selling links on student web pages (that end in .edu) is nothing new, really. Google has always valued .edu and .gov pages more than regular tlds even though they deny it publicly. However recently it seems that they have devalued them a little bit. Today, when searching for ‘buy viagra online‘ only 20% of the first page returns a .edu or .gov link, whereas not too long ago this figure was 80%. But nonetheless, a student’s .edu account is still very valuable.
Selling your .edu links
Selling your links takes very little time and effort, especially if you price them to sell. Right now, the .edu market at Digital Point forums consists of a few different products:
- Plain Links: ~ $10+ permanent links
- Customizable web pages: $30-70 for a permanent page
- Blogs: $10-20/month for your own niche blog. $4-12/sponsored blog post, blogroll $3-10/month
The prices depend on your marketing, and whether or not you can really make your links niche oriented. Travel links from a travel blog with a .edu extension are obviously worth more than travel links on a generic page. It’s all about the sell really, so that’s why prices vary greatly.
All in all, selling links is a decent amount of money for less than an hour of work for college students. If your student account already has some PageRank, its value will increase even more. So with a little bit of web know-how and a couple hours, students can walk away with $200 relatively easy. That’s plenty to pad the alcohol budget for the next couple months.
