What to do when you no longer want to graduate

The line between graduates and non-graduates are gradually blurring. It’s been long perceived that a degree will pave the way for a better future. But if you suddenly decide to avoid the status quo, you’ll find that there are other, creative ways to getting what you want.

Having a degree may afford you and the person hiring you a level of security. The fact of the matter is, the real world is never secure; it will be your ability to adapt that will take you forward and in. The most important thing you should take to heart is the idea of what you want to do. Do you have a clear idea of what profession you’d like? If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer, you will certainly need the degree.

Otherwise, non-college degree jobs aren’t created equal. Indeed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has shown that 3 out of 10 jobs don’t need degree holders but the best paying non-degree jobs are those that require the most training.

Build your most basic skills. These include math, communication, and language skills. There are many things you won’t learn in college that you will acquire with experience and one is the ability to sell oneself. Another is the initiative to build your abilities; though you may have a short resume, you can always take on lower-paying jobs for the experience and training.

Teach yourself. Read, read, and read. Then apply what you learn.

Allow others to teach you. When you can, communicate with the experts and ask them how they got to where they are; this is also the best time to build your network. You’ll find that sometimes it isn’t so much your skills as it is the people you know that will help you find that job.

Be yourself. As with anything, you shouldn’t concern yourself too much about the pay. Be ready to work on something you love and make money while doing it. You may start at the dregs, but you’ll have enough to fuel you for a lifetime.

Lastly, always remember that nothing can make you successful but yourself.
