How Your Mindset Affects Your Start Up

October 11th, 20062 Comments

Perhaps one of the most critical factors that will affect the success of your college start up business is your own mindset. Starting up your own business - whether online or not - while still in college can be a tricky thing to pull off. This is because of many different factors.

The fueling thought when it comes to college start up is: Why wait till you graduate to start making money? This is itself is a good idea to hold on to. The problem lies in the mindset of a college student when it comes to success. Whether you admit it or not, as a student, you have that niggling thought at the back of your mind – if you fail in this venture, you have the excuse that you are still a student and that being one excuses your failure. That tiny (and maybe unconscious) thought may very well be the cause of the dreaded failure.

If you really want to be a success, no matter how small your idea may start out to be, then you have to get rid of that tiny concept of failure. Many college students starting up a business are affected by their peer’s opinion. To what extent, no one really knows. However, that seemingly unimportant factor has a great effect on how one goes about his business. The key to success depends on how you view your start up business. The question you should focus on is: What is your ultimate goal?

Determining this clearly and holding on to it is what will keep you going. You should not let yourself be distracted by what other people may think of you and what you are doing. Day to day happenings may change. Your business activities may go either way – up or down. Regardless of this, what should drive you as an entrepreneur is your goal, your objective. If you let other people’s opinions drive your business, then you are setting yourself up for failure even before you start.

It may be easy to say that you have your goals set. It is another thing to stick with them and go on with your venture. Daily operations will not always go your way. You just have to accept that. What should keep you going is the knowledge that you have set your sights on an end goal and that you are willing to do most anything to achieve that. Do not let yourself be sidetracked by little things that may seem important.

The bottom line is persistence. When you know where you want to go, set a plan on how to get there. Along the way, adjustments may be needed. Be flexible enough to bend when you need to. However, do not let yourself be distracted by trifling things. Develop your mindset and keep it, no matter what. The size of your business should not matter. What other people think should not matter. Know what you want and go for it. That is the secret to your start up’s success.

Good points which I think can apply to any entrepreneur, seasoned and budding.

I’m a budding young entrepreneur in college (called uni in Australia) and definitely agree you need to have the right kind of mindset and ability to take in what others say, but don’t pay too much attention to your peers. If you think it’s a good idea, go for it. If you fail, no probs… you’re in college. Analyse your mistakes and take note of them.

I think another big point is staying in good health. I’ve let my health deteriorate over the past few weeks with no exercise and eating utter crap (if at all). I’ve definitely felt less drive to follow my startup passions, felt extremely tired and it’s affected my studies, socialability and businesses.

Hi,
I quite agree with your view. One thing I have found out in life is that you can start a business with the aim of failing and expect to fail. You have to get rid of what I call the failure-mentality before you should even start working on your idea.

I still remember when I was about to start http://www.nairahost.com with two other friends. The first thing we had to do is to ensure that we eliminate any trace of doubt in our mind. The first year was indeed very rough and I must tell you that we would have probably suspended the business idea but our persistence to see it through kept us on. Today, we are growing stronger and it is even becoming hard to now believe that we can fail.
