How To Get a Six-Figure Salary Straight Out of College

November 8th, 20076 Comments

Jon over at OnMoneymaking discusses his method for nailing a six-figure salary with his first job out of college.  That’s admirable dude.  Most people in this country, not to mention this world, never hit it.

The only gripe I have with Jon’s article is where he says that it’s just “stupid” to start out doing what you love.  In fact his advice is the opposite:  Forget about doing what you love for a while.

Kudos to Jon for hitting 6 figures, but in my honest opinion, the resources and infrastructure are now in place so that anyone, anywhere, with enough passion, can do exactly what they want and still hit 6 figures within a few years.   So I guess it’s a decision that you ultimately have to make:  do I want to kill myself now for the sake of the sacred green cow, or do I want to drink from the fountain of life while still enabling myself to prosper?

Everyone’s going to have a different answer to that.  My answer, several years ago, was to stop worshiping the sacred green cow and instead carve my own largely untraveled path to success.

Thanks for the link, Ryan.

Congratulations on being able to carve out your own path to success. Most people don’t figure that out so early.

I’m certainly not against following your dreams, but most people don’t know what they want to do when they graduate. And if you don’t know, you might as well be making some money while you figure it out :-)

In any case, you’ve got a great blog going here. I’m now subscribed.

Duh, forgot to subscribe. Funny to be lazy about being lazy.

Anyway, I’d always reccy that someone make as much money as possible when they graduate from college. Because once you’re made the big dough at the arbitrage desk, you can always go back.

A year out of school working at the arts centre and you want the job? Luck to ya.

“the resources and infrastructure are now in place so that anyone, anywhere, with enough passion, can do exactly what they want and still hit 6 figures within a few years.”

This might just be the biggest line of bullshit I’ve read all month. Please stop talking out your ass just to post something more than a link. Otherwise, back up what you’re saying with examples, data, facts, anything. Without some cold hard facts, you’re just blowing smoke up people’s asses and foolishly giving college graduates false hope. The plain and simple fact is that the vast majority of American salaries are $75k or under, per Wikipedia. What “infrastructure” and “resources” are you talking about? Most industries pay six figures only to their most experienced and highly skilled employees.

Ooooooh, Wikipedia.

Read what he wrote. It was a bit expansive, and perhaps he should have said that you should not be grossly obese or have BO or have gone to technical college in West Va, but those are quibbles.

My HVAC guy bills $75/hour and works for himself. 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, he’s grossing $150K.

So maybe even technical college is not a real barrier.

If you want to make money above all other things and you can distinguish between want and need, then you can do it.

So, you’re saying that your HVAC guy is doing “exactly what [he] wants”? Your comment supports my point of view more than his — I doubt your HVAC guy is “living his dream.” The point is that what you WANT to do is probably not what’s going to net you the big money. That’s why all the “good” jobs that people want pay so little — tons of demand, so they can get away with paying next to nothing.

Well, I dunno if he wouldn’t rather be Ms. America, but Ernesto just got his US citizenship, he brought his Mama from some god forsaken village in Mexico, and his three kids are in school and doing fine.

He seems pretty happy and works like a man.

Not everyone has the same definition or requirements for doing what they want.

In our business we’re unhappy if we have to work with Java instead of Ruby or whatever. Back when I was doing manual labor I was pretty happy to stay out of the rain.
