He seems pretty happy and works like a man. Not everyone has the same definition or requirements for doing what they want. In our business we're unhappy if we have to work with Java instead of Ruby or whatever. Your comment supports my point of view more than his -- I doubt your HVAC guy is "living his dream." The point is that what you WANT to do is probably not what's going to net you the big money. That's why all the "good" jobs that people want pay so little -- tons of demand, so they can get away with paying next to nothing. My HVAC guy bills $75/hour and works for himself. 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, he's grossing $150K. So maybe even technical college is not a real barrier.
