5 Business Lessons I Learned from “The Apprentice”

apprentice.jpgI’ve been watching “The Apprentice” since it’s first season, and even if I don’t always like the show, I watch it because I learn a lot. Plus, the occasional business train wreck is interesting to me. Here are 5 important lessons I learned from Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice”:

Step up and contribute. If you don’t volunteer your skills and present them to the team, you’re going to be overlooked and given “busy work” as a result. Also, it’s very convenient to blame the loss on people who just sit back and never express their opinion, especially during the planning stage. So if you’re

It helps to be creative. This is especially important if you’re just starting out in business yourself and no one else can do your flyers, design your products, or create your graphics. If you don’t think creativity is natural to you, then get in touch with creative people or look at what they’ve done in the past. Remember that fugly “two globes” Pepsi bottle in season 2 (see pic)? That mess could’ve been avoided if just one person on the team was creative.

Know and believe in your product.  Customers can easily smell salespeople who don’t believe in their product.  If customers sense your doubt, they’ll be doubting you as well.  You need to be enthusiastic, proud, and confident when making the pitch.

Meet with the client. Always.  Many teams have fallen hard because of their inability to meet with the client.  This is important because it helps you analyze what your client needs.  This also helps you build rapport.  If you don’t show up, you’re late, or you’re not ready with the right questions, your clients are going to lose confidence in you.
