Anatomy of the Student Entrepreneur

I suppose it takes a lot of gastrointestinal fortitude to venture into the vast unknown of managing your own business, when otherwise you can just sit back, write a few exams, graduate and eventually land a good-enough-paying job.
If being a professional businessman isn’t daunting enough, how much harder is it for student entrepreneurs? For those who have to squeeze in time for their own businesses amidst the already jam-packed schedule where quizzes and deadlines are the bread and butter for academic survival?
It is not exactly for the faint of heart – or for ones with a weak stomach for the exotic. But if ever the prestige and glamour of this lifestyle had already caught your eye, you might as well be armed with some useful tips:
- Be in it for the money, but not solely for the money – Remember, kids, time is gold. Literally. If you’re just going to be spending the time (which you originally intended for cramming for your finals or research for your painfully overdue thesis) to your small venture, make sure it’s going to be productive and profitable. Devise a strategy for optimum time management and performance efficiency. It is also much easier to do all of this if you actually love what you’re doing. Of course, you have to show up for school once in a while.
- It won’t hurt to know – Voilà the secret to success. Simple and deadly. Know what do and for whom you are going to do it. Make sure that you have a market and know it inside-out, and also come up with the right product or service to satisfy the demand of your market.
- Guts of steel – Now it’s time for the hard sting. Doing your best wouldn’t always automatically amount to success. So remove your rose-stained glasses because things could get nasty. Okay, let’s put it this way – you could go bankrupt on your first try. The best thing to do about mistakes is not to make them. But if you really have to, have the right attitude, get over the hump quick and find a way to fix it.
- Your choice – Getting into business would always be a product of your own decision and actions. This is something that doesn’t just fall flying into your lap. If you are not careful, it is possible that your academic performance might take a slight tumble down the ladder, to say the least. So you might as well own up to it and remember that it is your own choice.
- Have fun – Lastly, it’s very important that you enjoy the grind. Life is an adventure, and that includes all the cuts and bruises. Maintain a healthy membership in your life-support group. Although, your social life would definitely diminish, a nice set of friends would come handy in tough times. Remember, you are still young (enough) and you have the innate right to have fun.
