The Giving Season for Entrepreneurs
As the Christmas and holiday season gets kicked off with the conclusion of Thanksgiving, it’s brings with it a good time to start thinking about how you can give back. Being a profit motivated entrepreneur myself, I know how hard it can be to just “give away”money that was earned through such hard work. But really, it’s something that needs to be done to support programs that can make tremendous impacts on people’s lives. So I take this time to encourage everyone reading this to give something back, because it can be a truly great act if done correctly.
Where do I donate?
Choosing where to donate is usually a huge obstacle for prospective donors. Hearing horror stories about wasted funds in non profit charities probably discourages a lot of people from giving all together. My solution to this is using Charity Navigator. Charity navigator helps people separate the really good, efficient charities from the not so good, inefficient places. This tool ensures you’ll maximize your dollars being donated to the causes you choose. The site has ratings on pretty much every charity imaginable as well, so there will surely be something that appeals to you.
“I’m Frugal, No Thanks…”
If I still haven’t made you feel guilty for not donating, I have another option. Kiva is a peer to peer loan website that is almost exactly like Prosper (which I covered in my last post about online business loans). But the catch is that Kiva loans are only for entrepreneurs in poor countries who need small amounts of money to get their businesses up and running. The impact of a small loan on these entrepreneurs from countries like Ghana, Cambodia, and Guatemala is huge to say the least. And for those still thinking about the monetary side of giving money to Kiva, yes you will receive your money back eventually since it is just a loan.
My Thoughts
Basically, I’m just trying to stress the fact that everyone should do their part in helping out those who are less fortunate, and the holiday season is a time that just happens to remind us of the needs others have. So whether you choose to donate to the United Way, an obscure and efficient charity through Charity Navigator, or through Kiva, I hope that you choose to receive the same glowing feeling from giving that I experience.
