Use your talents for publicity

December 30th, 20053 Comments

Today I was thinking about ways to publicize new projects and get my name “out there” and I thought about designing a WordPress theme. I would base it loosely on my design for The Poker Blog, since that had the most success. In the theme I would be able to include a link back to my site and my name – instant publicity. Even if only a few people used the theme it would generate backlinks on every page of their website.

Then I realized that anyone could use their talent to create publicity. My talents online are designing and coding websites, marketing websites, and writing. I can use all of those to my advantage to market my projects and get more publicity.

Maybe your talent it programming. Why not write a plug in for WordPress or create a plug in for Firefox that people can’t live without? It will get your name out to people who have never heard of you before. Maybe someone from Google will say, “Hey, this guy wrote a great plug in – lets give him a job.”

Maybe you’re great at installing hardware? Write some guides and post them on your blog. Include things that people can’t find everywhere else so that your content has more value than every other hardware site online.

If you want to be successful it’s going to be hard work, but using your talents to help you along the way will make it easier.

I agree. One of the best things you can do to create abundant oppportunity is to know your talents – and then be willing to share those talents with others.

For example: I can kinda make websites. Dodgy, non-web compliant ones, but websites nonetheless. I’ve used this skill to help make websites for some of my uni clubs. And now, as a result of that, I’ve been asked to make further websites for $$.

Yes that is how many of the people we know about today got going. Look at Dave Shea with the Zen Garden, Shaun Inman with FIR, the list goes on.

I have been running a blog on and off for years, I remember the days of every body using Greymatter with bluerobot css most of those chaps have passed me by because they contributed and got themselves noticed.

I think this embodies the essence of opportunity in the blogosphere. Now more than ever, it’s possible to become recognized for your talents because you can place your work in a forum that’s easily accessible by MILLIONS of interested viewers.

My experiences over the last two months have really driven home the point that good work gets noticed on the internet. For the most part, people are willing to applaud you for your talents, and oftentimes, this leads to bigger and better opportunities.

The simple lesson here is to make your projects accessible! Showcase them for all to see, and let the chips fall where they may.

Share your thoughts!!!
