How organization will make me even richer
While watching the NFL playoffs yesterday, I decided to multitask a little bit in hopes of getting my finances a bit more organized this year compared to last year. With scholarships, college tuition, business income, and offline income, my financial situation is infinitely more complex now than this time last year. So for the next 12 hours, I was glued to my Excel workbook creating beautiful, functional spreadsheets for my online businesses, college finances, personal finances, and future financial situation.
After finally putting my laptop down and waking up this morning with my entire life finances in front of me, I’ve realized I gained several important things from this little project:
Confidence - With my financial road mapped out for the next few years, I now have a lot more confidence in what I’m committed to. There is less anxiety now, and I’m confident I’m making the right decisions in my life. My organization will undoubtedly help me make better decisions in the future as well.
I have more money than I thought
More money is always a good thing, but by mapping out the next 2-3 years of my finances, I realized that with conservative estimates I will have more money available to me in the future than originally expected.
So since I have confidence and more capital than expected, I’m going to be stepping up my investment portfolio because I have the means to do so. Like Ryan has mentioned earlier regarding diversifying your investments a bit, I plan to do so with a move into paper assets - aka the markets. I’m willing to play around with a couple thousand now in search of a little profit since I know that I can afford to lose a bit.
I’ll surely give some insight into my market moves in the very near future since it will probably consume a large portion of my free time in the next couple weeks. But to restate my thesis: know your financial situation today so you can position yourself better for tomorrow. Make some excel spreadsheets. If nothing else, it’s fun ;).
