How to budget your capital

December 21st, 20070 comments

Starting a business venture is expensive and can be a toughie for a student entrepreneur. Every angle of it requires more than enough bucks, as there may be potential glitches that may mean additional expense. So what are you to do to cut down on capital requirements?
Consider the following tips.

List all the things you need. Know all equipment and other supplies your business calls for and rank them according to how urgent and important they are. The most important things should be given first priority.

Figure out how long until each item will “pay for itself.” This is what businessmen term as Return on Investment (ROI), wherein investment gains will cover investment costs. The break-even point is important to know as it’s the time you really start earning.

Don’t underestimate the cost of each item. Not everything has to be pricey to be effective. Sometimes, the simplest and least expensive equipment can shed hours off a day’s work.

See which items you can get for free or secondhand. Capital-expensive ventures require you to buy top caliber equipment. But being the resourceful young entrepreneur you are, you know it’s sometimes practical to settle for the cheaper (as they CAN be good as new).

Avoid buying on credit.
Obtaining high-end equipment with your credit account may wear you off and tear your pocket if interest starts to rise. To avoid payables, aim for the cost-effective equipment and supplies.

Lease expensive equipment.
If you can’t afford to buy costly business equipment such as personal computer, fax machine, etc., opt to lease them. Some companies selling business equipment often lease as well.

If you’re starting on a tight budget, maximize your assets by using the “first things first” policy. Find out and capitalize on the most important things. Most importantly, though, remember to spend your money wisely.
