Buying and selling blogs podcast
Yaro Starak of Entrepreneurs Journey has podcast up at his blog (he posted it on January 3, 2006) where he describes purchasing SmallBusinessBranding.com. He even gives the price he paid, which is something I’ve been wondering about since he announced he bought it. He actually mentions The Poker Blog sale, which surprised me. The podcast gives a different perspective on buying and selling blogs and is definitely worth a listen.
Yaro (the buyer) and Michael Pollock (the seller) are both discussing the sale of Small Business Branding and the considerations they each took during the transaction. If you’re considering participating in website sales from either side listen to their podcast - it has tons of great information.
At one point Michael actually mentions that he thought I may have gotten less than The Poker Blog was actually worth by going to SitePoint. Yaro explains that Sitepoint usually values sites at around 10 times their monthly revenue. I got 20. With every website I’ve sold at Sitepoint I have gotten much more than 10x’s the monthly revenue. Why?
I think that people at Sitepoint place a premium on quality design. They understand that content is important but people are much happier to pay a high price for a great looking website rather than a website they’ll have to redesign themselves. If you’re going to sell your websites, make sure to invest some time in cleaning it up and making sure everything looks unified - it will help bump the price up quite a bit.

Good point about the design elements Ben. While a good design is not in my top 5 valuation criteria it probably is for a lot of other people. Humans can’t help being impressed by good ascetics and anything you do to regarding eye candy and usability is certainly going to increase the value of a blog.
