Watch Me Make A WebSite

March 4th, 20078 Comments

I thought it would be fun to give College Startup readers a peak into my thought processes as I plan and develop a new site from scratch.

So here’s the deal. In the next few weeks, I’ll be starting and producing an informational site called OneBigMaine. You’ll be able to find it at http://www.onebigmaine.com The site will be an informational guide for 1) Maine tourists and 2) Maine property buyers. All of the content is being managed by a current resident of Maine who will take all the pictures, do all the writing, etc in exchange for a monthly salary.

So far, all I’ve done is acquire the domain and hire a writer. Stay tuned for the next episode where I reveal a rock solid strategy for building quick leverage for a new site, regardless of whether you own any other sites.

Interesting. I’m starting a site about Rhode Island with a friend, and so your tips might come in handy ;-)

Will be following closely, to get some tips. I’m in the middle of a project to build a website every 5 weeks:

I’m interested in why you started this project? Is quality Maine information something you can’t find on the net right now? Or are you just passionate about Maine?

Why did you start this?

Great question. I let life circumstances and the people I know dictate the sort of sites I start. I met a professional writer from Maine, also have family in Maine, and know that Maine has become a popular vacation home location.

I also have the benefit of having half a dozen state oriented vacation property sites that consistently make quite a bit each day. So I have proof that the business model works.

However, I’m also taking a risk in that I’ve never paid professional writer fees before, though my understanding is that doing so pays off several years down the road.

I also have found from friends that have local sites that they make more with local sites than general topic sites. You are on the spot.

Great idea, Ryan. I’m looking forward to reading more about it. Your comment about starting sites based on people you know is a good lesson in networking and being on the lookout for opportunities.

Thanks Ryan. I appreciate the insight. I’m always interested in the motivation behind why people do what they do, moreso than what they are doing.

[...] In a post made more than 2 weeks ago, I offered to let you watch me make a website. I bet you were wondering whether I’d hold true to that promise. [...]
