Google is so tricky!
I read somewhere that Google had released an online version of Picasa. I have never used the software, but I am always interested in finding a way to organize my photos. I went ahead and downloaded the “web version,” which I guess lets me publish my photos to the web. Not sure why it’s better than Flickr yet, but that’s not the point of this post.
When I installed Picasa I was presented with a list of options. Google included the normal stuff, like “Run this program when Windows starts” and all of that. Unchecking all of that is pretty automatic for me - there are very few programs I need to run at startup.
Then I noticed an interesting option - “Set Google as my default search engine in Internet Explorer.” A little jab at Microsoft’s attempt to make MSN Search the default search in Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Vista. I’m not sure it will work, but if all of Google’s upcoming applications include this option it might be an interesting little way to keep their market share in the search engine market.
I’m not saying it’s good or bad - I use Google for all my searches, but others like MSN and Yahoo. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I just thought it was interesting the way Google is tackling the problem.
Does anyone think Microsoft will complain? And if they do - do they even have a case? Isn’t bundling IE with Windows and making MSN Search the default for their browser just as tricky to the average user?

I’m sure Microsoft will grumble and complain, after all it costs them very little to do so. Whether the complaint will be taken seriously by anyone or have any effect is another matter.
