Marketing College-Startup.com

November 13th, 20050 comments

Today has been busy - I registered College-Startup.com, updated the Poker Blog template I use on ThePokerBlog.net to fit this site, and integrated AdSense (kind of). Unfortunately all of that is pretty useless if I don’t get any visitors to the site! So how do I go about marketing a new website?

I am not exactly a marketing expert and I don’t know the inner workings on Google PageRank, so I am not doing anything special to get my sites out there - maybe I should be, but I’m not. I believe a website that has good content worth reading will earn the recognition it deserves over time. I can’t expect to overtake established blogs with hundreds or even thousands of posts over night, I need to prove that my content is worth reading.

So I write. A lot. I try to average about 1 post per day on ThePokerBlog.net, and I will do the same for this site (I hope). Writing a lot isn’t easy and sometimes it will feel like there is nothing to write about, but there is, I promise.

I spend about an hour or two a day creating new content for my blogs. Some of it may not be published for a few weeks, some might be published that day, some might never get published. But I need to always have new ideas for posts saved somewhere - that way, on a boring day when there aren’t any ideas popping into my head I just press the publish button and a post that I wrote a few weeks ago goes live and everyone is happy.

I keep notes on Backpack and I save any writing I do using WordPress - I have anywhere from 5-20 posts saved at a time in - some are a few sentences, some a few paragraphs, some just a quick idea I thought of.

As far as PageRank goes, I know that it’s (somewhat) important and I understand it’s significance, but I don’t actively try to bump my PR. Google likes new content, so by posting once a day I automatically earn a lot of points. With 20-30 link backs, I can get a PR5 pretty easily. On the first Google PR update of ThePokerBlog’s 3 months online it got a PR 5. I didn’t even try to get backlinks, I simply linked quality websites when the webmaster asked and they linked me back.

My point is that the best marketing strategy that any website can have is to produce quality content that their targeted market is interested in. The target market of this website is people looking to earn money through low cost ideas that don’t take long to implement. I probably won’t analyze Sears business plan or discuss the financial numbers of Yahoo! and Google. My readers don’t care. Instead I’ll explain how to market a new website without spending money, I’ll talk about where to place AdSense ads so that they’re most effective, and I’ll look at software that could make life easier.

Quality content attracts quality visitors. It’s so simple that most people overlook it.
