My new blog acquisition - Going green

July 16th, 20082 Comments

I was able to finally close the deal on a new blog that was for sale. This is only my second acquisition and it’s a bit more spendy than my first one about a year ago which was also documented on this blog (My new niche travel blog). Cancun Blog has made well over it’s purchase price of just $200, and I think my next one has even greater potential.

The new blog is EcoFuss.com, a Green Eco Friendly News, environmental issues blog. Green everything is already booming and will continue to do so, so getting in the niche now seems to be a smart move long term for the …

Outsourcing: A Boon for Small Businesses

July 15th, 20080 comments

I knew an independent film producer who did all her work on her own. She got very ill because of the stress; this forced her to relegate the marketing and minor administrative tasks to others, namely myself. Since then, she’s been able to concentrate more fully on acquiring the necessary funding for her films, on actually running her business, and getting enough free time to recover. She hasn’t been horribly ill since.

For your sake, I hope you won’t wait for something terrible to happen before considering delegating tasks to other people you can rely on:

Why You Shouldn’t Compete on Price Alone

July 14th, 20081 Comment

Many small businesses believe that driving their prices lower than the competition will attract more volume. That may be the case; but you sacrifice something very important: profit margins, which means an inability to adapt to changes in cost. The drawbacks only start there.

You may also give your customers the impression that you will always be selling at a lower price. So, build loyalty to YOU such that they won’t be looking at your prices inasmuch as your ability to satisfy and deliver.

Freelance Writing: Getting started for real

July 7th, 20081 Comment

Freelance writing at first thought can be kind of a glamorous vision - getting paid for sitting in coffee shops, jotting down your opinions on a topic, working whenever you want, and getting paid for your published articles. I mean, Chris from Chrisblogging made $10,000 last month, and you probably already figured out by now that that comes to $120,000 a year. Easy right?

For real though, it’s tough. Finding clients and work is endless and stressful. Writing pieces can take a long time. Covering topics you hate is never a pleasure, and I’m sure the list goes on and on.

But, if you’re looking for some extra income in college and don’t really mind writing outside of class, here …

Inverview with Garrett from startup TravelRelic.com

July 5th, 20080 comments

Garrett from new travel product startup TravelRelic.com has been kind enough to grant me a quick interview about his business, marketing, and the startup process in general. I was thinking it could help give College-Startup readers some motivation and a glimpse into a real startup business and an entrepreneur making it happen. So read, enjoy, learn, travel and then go buy a travel relic.

Tell me about your background

My undergraduate degree is in Industrial Design from Georgia Tech. After undergrad I worked with a major packaging company and managed the development of new packaging for Coca-Cola from the supplier-side. I’ve always loved being at the point in business where new business/product ideas are discovered and carried out.
