Very Substantial Entrepreneur Scholarship – McKelvey Foundation
Here’s the unintended second part of my entrepreneur scholarship blog post series which was made known to me through a Google Ad recently. Following up my post on the upcoming and not-terribly-hard-to-get NFIB scholarship, I present to you the McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneur scholarship. While it’s a scholarship for entrepreneurs, it is of a different breed due to its payout and requirements.
The McKelvey Scholarship is an award for serious high school senior entrepreneurs who are attending an accredited US institution. There are a host of other requirements as well as follow:
- Own and operate a business or non profit organization for a year or more
- Have at least one paid employee that does not include a partner or yourself
- Have sales revenue if you’re a for profit business
- Provide substantial documentation of the above when asked for
- Agree to participate in a telephone interview, if selected as a finalist
- Winners must attend the summer e-Venture program (2009 in St. Louis, MO)
Scholarship Applications due by January 25, 2009.
Right off the bat, it’s easy to see the differences. This award pays out up to $10,000 per year as well and seems to be much more competitive and lucrative. Additionally, the requirement of an employee and documention suggests that you’ll have to have a serious revenue generating business.
Another unique aspect of the program is the requirement for the winner to attend the E-Venture Program. The E-venture program is a unique 3 day networking event that everyone should really want to go to, and feel lucky for attending given the opportunity. The networking with like minded peers and business leaders could lead to valuable conversations, leads and collaboration, let alone just a great enjoyable retreat experience.
So spread the word, tell your sophomore little brother to start his business, and maybe you’ll get lucky. I love when McKelvey and NFIB are doing here, and check them out fo sho.
