Scary online Productivity application

Want to know how you spend every second of your day on your computer? Initially, you might think “Yes, that’d be interesting,” then almost immediately you’ll probably think “No, that’d be scary.” Well web 2.0 has brought us a light, fun, introspective, web application and download that monitors everything you do on your computer from websites visited and applications used – it’s called Rescue Time dot com.

College-Startup founder Ben Bleikamp wrote about the most useful web app ever, and I felt inclined to give the app a try since I’m always trying to deter my wasteful time spent online. With always loads of homework, online blogs to manage, and plenty of school/finance/career planning, I decided this might be the tool to keep me in check.

Rescue Time creates simple graphs for the most used apps/sites over whatever time periods you want. Also, you can tag each individual app however you want with descriptions. For example, I use the tags waste (facebook, etc.), communication (email), finance (bank, stocks, etc.), websites, and work along with some others.

So a typical graph generated should…err..hopefully resemble the following, but not hopefully not suggest the same allocation of time spent online.

Rescue Time

So after looking at disappointing results as pictured above, unproductive/wasteful people can change their habits. (me!)… So this simple, scary download + web app is very powerful and useful, and should be tested out by all those looking to get their poor time management under control. Give it a try, and thank Ben and I later.

This is seriously cool. I’ve only been using it a few minutes, and it’s just so slick. I am very very worried about what it may reveal about my time management though!
